  1. What are the different meanings of the title, Netherland?
  2. The New York Times called Netherland, "a resonant meditation on the American Dream," while USA Today deemed it a "meditation on despair, loss, and exile." Do you think either of these descriptions is accurate? If you were writing about the novel, how would you fill in the blank: "a mediation on ________________"?
  3. Hans once says, while thinking of his childhood, "I was not much extracted from the innocence in which the benevolent but fraudulent world conspires to place us as children" (93). What role does innocence and childhood play in the novel? How does Hans’ childhood affect his analysis of his present situation?
  4. Just before deciding to return to England, Hans describes finding “sanctuary” in “reverie’s holy space” (217). How does reverie, indeed, act as a sanctuary for Hans throughout the novel? Have you experienced this ability to escape into your mind?
  5. Why does Netherland end with a memory of Hans’ mother, followed by Hans turning in happiness to his family? How are these moments connected? What do they tell you about Hans?
  6. What role does Chuck Ramkissoon play in Hans’ life? Were they friends, business associates, or something else?
  7. What do Chuck’s stories add to the novel?
  8. Is the time and setting of the novel important? Do you think this can be classified as a "post-9/11" New York story or is it more personal and timeless?
  9. Why do you think it was possible for Hans and Rachel to reunite? Do you think they had a happy ending?
  10. Rate Netherland on a scale of 1 to 5.
