The Bottom Line

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon will appeal to men and women. It is cleverly written and draws readers in to the mind of the narrator, who has a developmental disability. It is funny, sweet and a must read for anyone who knows someone with special needs.

Guide Review - Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon - Book Review

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon is unlike any other book I have read. That's because the narrator, Christopher John Francis Boone, is unlike anyone I have ever met. He is a teenager with an developmental disability who is a mathematical genius but cannot understand human emotions. The novel is written as if Christopher is writing it for a class assignment. He numbers the chapters in prime numbers because that is what he likes. In fact, you hear a lot about what Christopher likes and does not like in the pages of this mystery.

The story begins when Christopher finds a dead dog on the neighbor's lawn. As he works to figure out who killed the dog, you learn a lot about Christopher's family, past and neighbors. It soon becomes clear that the dog's murder is not the only mystery worth solving in Christopher's life.

This story will draw you in, make you laugh and cause you to see the world through different eyes. The novel entertains, but it also provides an avenue for empathizing with people with developmental disabilities. I highly recommend it for book clubs (see The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time book club discussion questions) and individuals who are looking for a good read.

''Where should i start! This book was one of my favorite reads, it let me understand what it was like for people with aspergers syndrome. This made Christopher's life very difficult but in doing this Mark Haddon was able to include lots of different qualities to Christopher like his behavioral problems. The best part for me to this book was the fact that Mark decided to create the voice of the book very flat. This was very effective as lots of the things that Christopher said funny and entertaining to read. This book is about a young 15 year old boy called Christopher Boone, he suffers from aspergers syndrome. He enjoys maths and lives with his father. His mother 'died' but soon Christopher finds out she has been sending letters to him which his father has been hiding. A dog called Wellington which is killed with a garden fork, because of this Christopher sets out to find out who killed him. Throughout the book Christopher faces many challenges and finds the killer of Wellington. I would think that this book is aged to about 13-15 as there is a lot of swearing in it and some of the language some people may not be able to understand fully. This book was very good as it used lots of emotive language which made my heart sink at times or laugh nearly falling on the floor! I recommend this book as it is amazing and your mind will never want to put it down.''
