Guide Review - Pirateology - Book Review

Pirateology is not your average book; It’s part coffee table book, part children’s book, and part activity kit. The unusual cover grabs your attention, and the rest of the book don’t disappoint. Pirateology is the “recently-discovered” personal journal of Captain Lubber, on a globe-spanning sail in hunt of an infamous female pirate in 1723. Lubber’s journal chronicles the events and intrigues of his journey and quest. In doing so, he also shares with the reader an encyclopedia of pirate facts, culture, and lore. His journal itself becomes a treasure hunt, dropping clues embedded in treasure maps and leaving behind secret codes to be deciphered.

The level of detail in Pirateology is astonishing. Pages are filled with detailed drawings and lavish maps. The reader can untie letters bound with ribbons, practice sailors’ knots on ropes attached to the book, or assemble a sundial. The cover of the book is even set with a working compass. All in all, it’s a beautiful package that invites the reader in and makes it hard to put down. You’ll want to read it over and over again.

Part of a series, which includes Egyptology and Dragonology, Pirateology would make a great gift for anyone interested in pirates, whether it’s a long-fascination or one recently piqued by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Pirateology will stoke the imaginations of all kinds of readers.
