Chris Bohjalian gives readers a ghost story just in time for Halloween. In The Night Strangers, a family moves to an old New Hampshire house to try and rebuild their lives after the husband, a pilot, had to crash a plane with double engine failure into a lake, killing 39 passengers. Unfortunately, the house, like the family, is haunted.
The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman is historical fiction. It tells the story of four women in the year 70 CE in ancient Israel who are holding out during the storming of the fortress of Masada, where 900 Jews took a stand against Roman soldiers (and only a few survived).
Jeffrey Eugenides hasn't published a book in almost a decade, since the release of the extremely popular and well regarded Middlesex. The Marriage Plot is a much different story than Middlesex -- focusing in on limited characters, limited time and limited plot rather than having an epic scope. Eugenides' writing, however, is still spot on.
Oscar Finley and Wally Figg are the two partners and only two lawyers at Finley & Figg -- a law firm that mainly handles DUIs and divorces. When a young new attorney joins the firm, the partners see a chance at a big case, and big bucks, without much work. The Litigators is another fast paced legal thriller from the master of the genre, John Grisham.
