Beach Books

My favorite beach reads would be anything by Debbie Macomber.

No More Time For Sorrow

by Dr. Robert Beeman, you can get it on Amazon. It is a real on the edge of your seat, cannot put down thriller.

The Other Boleyn Girl

it's by Phillipa Gregory. it's historical fiction at its absolute most fun! "the other boleyn girl" is anne's sister mary, who consorts with king henry VIII before anne marries him. two movies were made from this book and both are pretty bad, but the book is fabulous! it's long, so just this one book may last you the entire vacation. and i'll just bet you'll come away from it knowing a little more about english history, although that shouldn't be your primary goal. just enjoy it!

Pop-Splat!

A book that will knock your smelly socks off is Pop-splat by Ian Martin. It's about a university student whose father is murdered in a 'hijacking'. Our hero (or antihero?) realises something fishy is going on and gets his Glock out to catch the bad guys. OK, there's a lot more to it than that. Think of it this way: if Quentin Tarantino wrote a book, this would be it. It's a rip-roaring rollercoaster ride with enough action and entertainment to satisfy anyone but it also has some black comedy and clever ideas thrown into the mix. It'll stimulate your brains as well as your emotions. Oh, did I mention you can get it as an e-book? It's hiding somewhere on smashwords.com My vote: 5/5 stars

Pop-splat - an easy summer read

"This book is dedicated to the youth in the hope they will reject the crappy values of their parents". So begins Pop-splat, a thriller and social satire by South African author Ian Martin. The story is deceptively simple: a wealthy businessman is murdered in yet another Johannesburg hijacking. The son Matt - a disturbed product of a disturbed society - knows something is rotten and reluctantly decides to find out what stinks. This precipitates a violent, over-the-top but also bleakly funny hell-ride across the country. Sure, the narrative is entertaining and the book is easy to read as it's saturated with sick humour and action. But on another level it is jam-packed with ideas that give substance to the rollercoaster-ride story. So if you want your emotions and your intellect thoroughly stimulated, I can highly recommend Pop-splat. The first chapter is available at www.pop-splat.co.za.

Can You Keep A Secret?

Or any Sophie Kinsella books, for that matter. If you want an easy, romantic read, this is the one for you.

The Lost Daughter by Daralyse Lyons

You HAVE to add The Lost Daughter by Daralyse Lyons to your list. It is the most compelling novel I've ever read. Beautifully written along the lines of an Oprah's Book Club Novel (like Wally Lamb or Jodi Picoult). It's rich in both plot and character, and will hook you from the very first sentence. And it's written in short chapters so you can take it to the beach and breeze through it...

Dead Until Dawn

Or any of the Sookie Stackhouse books for that matter by Charlaine Harris (though go in order). quick, enjoyable reads for vampire fans.
—Guest marta

Dan Brown

I know you may groan when you hear this but Dan Brown has some good books. He often writes about religion, and his books are a blend of fact and fiction that gets you thinking.

The Beach House by James Patterson

I have read approx. 10 Patterson books and the one I enjoyed the most was beach house. The plotting was taut and the character building was well done. The suspense was gripping and the conclusion was worth the wait

Nora Roberts

I don't read Nora Roberts, usually, but her Circle Trilogy was quite enjoyable. I love fantasy/sci fi, the UK and vampires. Throw them all together, and you've got these books. Fun for a Charlaine Harris fan (me)!

Sorbonne Confidential

The tribulations of an American who tries to become an English teacher in France. Really enjoyable and thought provoking. Here's a short PRI interview with the author... http://www.theworld.org/node/26600
